A few days ago I was having dinner with two friends. As we prepared for an upcoming presentation a simple question was raised: What has inspired you this year?

I am inspired by the teachers I work with every day. This year the teachers at my school and district face many challenges. Budget cuts reduced staff and requires teachers to take on additional responsibilities and duties, while having less time for collaboration. I am inspired because they never stopped putting students first. They could have easily given up and accepted mediocre teaching, but they didn’t. They continue to do MORE with less. They have come together to make our school, a community for learning. It would have been easy for them to withdraw into their grade level silos and lose sight of what is best for our students, for our school, but they didn’t and they don’t. They have analyzed and embraced assessment data, figuring out ways to support at–risk students. The teachers have come together and united with a common vision – to facilitate shared leadership in an effort to increase student achievement as a unified school. I am certain they will make greatness happen.

I have shared my story, what has inspired you this year?

Hello, my name is Jen Robinson. I have been in education for over 20 years. I began teaching in Buffalo, NY in 1992, as a pre-school special education teacher. My experience ranges from primary grades through high school. My husband and I moved to Arizona in 2001, where we were fortunate enough to teach at the same school. In 2004, I achieved National Board Certification and currently support candidates. In 2011 I completed my Ed.D. in Leadership and Innovation. My dissertation research focused on supporting National Board candidates through their certification process. During the 2012-2013 school year, I completed my National Board renewal process. It was humbling and very powerful to step back into a classroom. I am currently an elementary principal. I am excited and hopeful for the new school year. I also serve on the Arizona Teacher Solutions Team where we are solutions focused in an effort to transform and elevate the teaching profession.
