thank-you-notesToday’s blog was inspired by Jimmy Fallon’s book, Thank You Notes. The book is based on his TV show where he expresses gratitude for everything from the slow moving family walking in front of him on the sidewalk to the name Lloyd for having two L’s. I thought it might be fun to write thank you notes related to education. Here are a few that come to mind…

Thank you

…Thoughtful classroom teacher, for always taking a restroom or snack break when I come to observe your classroom instruction. That’s okay I’ll wait. Thank you for scheduling my break time.

Thank you

…Oblivious parent who cannot pull their gigantic SUV forward in the parent pick up loop. The rest of the parents will risk their lives waiting in the busy intersection so you can have your ideal drop off spot.

Thank you

…For providing 21st century technology, with 20th century bandwidth and servers. We love the way you conveniently and automatically update and restart right in the middle of an on-line assessment or once the entire class has finally logged on.

Thank you

…Lunch menu designers, for conveniently scheduling the ever-popular fruit punch frozen push-up treats on school picture day. Not only is it is impossible to open them using the tear away dotted lines, but the bright red dye leaves life long stains.

I invite you to add to this list…what would you like to express your gratitude for? Who would you like to write a Thank You note to?

Maricopa, Arizona

Hello, my name is Jen Robinson. I have been in education for over 20 years. I began teaching in Buffalo, NY in 1992, as a pre-school special education teacher. My experience ranges from primary grades through high school. My husband and I moved to Arizona in 2001, where we were fortunate enough to teach at the same school. In 2004, I achieved National Board Certification and currently support candidates. In 2011 I completed my Ed.D. in Leadership and Innovation. My dissertation research focused on supporting National Board candidates through their certification process. During the 2012-2013 school year, I completed my National Board renewal process. It was humbling and very powerful to step back into a classroom. I am currently an elementary principal. I am excited and hopeful for the new school year. I also serve on the Arizona Teacher Solutions Team where we are solutions focused in an effort to transform and elevate the teaching profession.
